Welcome to 2001!
I am Bob McCune, your Club President for this year. I am very excited about the upcoming year and hope our club will continue to grow and prosper. As I have not written a newspaper article since high school (1975), I hope you will bear with my ramblings.
First, I would like to thank last year’s officers for all the leadership and support they provided: Brian Lowry, President, Neil Case, Vice President, Mike Spoelman, Treasurer, Bob Syrotchen, Secretary, and Ross Schwyhart, Chairman of the Board. Of course, no monthly meeting would have been complete without the Lindley’s and the Collins’ and their raffles. Finally, a huge thanks to all the other folks who volunteered throughout the year for projects big and small.
I would also like to thank in advance the new officers: Terry Myers, Vice President, Dave Gardner, Treasurer, Al Alberg, Secretary, and Brian Lowry, Chairman of the Board. I know we will get our money’s worth from them!
As with any club, it is the volunteers who make things happen. Bob Syrotchen has offered to take over the raffles this year. As other positions come open, club members are taking up the challenge. Thanks to you all for your help. We do need someone to take over the newsletter from Terry. So if anyone out there has a desire to "get the message to the people", we could use your help!
Last month’s run to the Shelby American Collection was very successful and fun according to everyone who went. It is hard to find interesting club events in the dead of winter, but this one went very well. To those of you who haven’t been there, you should find the time to go. Your visit will be entertaining and educational.
With ice on the roads and snow in the yard, our thoughts turn to upcoming events for the spring. We will try to bring back such popular events as the Garden of the Gods Cruise and Mustang Birthday party, as well as garage tours and cruises to local burger joints. We would also like to try some new events this year, and I strongly encourage your suggestions. Feel free to contact me with your suggestions anytime.
In addition to new events for the club, we would also like to add new articles to the newsletter. One suggestion was to have a "Tech Tips" article each month. This would cover anything you might have picked up over the years when restoring that old classic, or getting that extra bit of horsepower out of a late model ‘Stang. If you have an idea for an article, let one of the officers know and we will get it into the newsletter.
As we discussed at the January meeting, the club will get involved with the Colorado Old Car Council. This way our voices will be added to the growing throng to ensure our hobby will continue.
We also discussed the possibility of designing new club shirts, hats, and antenna flags. The desire was also strong to possibly replace the current club jacket with one of a different color. We will be able to provide more information on this at the February meeting.
I believe I’m done rambling for now. Take care, and I look forward to seeing you all at the next meeting!

The story continues ….
We didn’t have a December issue and I forgot I didn’t finish the article until after I printed the newsletter! Such are the woes of a world traveler.
My ‘65 was the first car on the dyno. Chip Hane set the car up with all the sensors and such and Walt Hane handled the throttle duties. Chip found a lot of loose ends from my hurried preparations, but we pressed on. My coupe’s best pull on the dyno was a 164 HP at 5000 RPM at the rear wheels, which frankly I found disappointing, given the TFS heads and Edelbrock Performer RPM intake!! Walt provided us with a correction factor for flywheel horsepower at sea level , based on real world results. My car was putting out 320 HP at the flywheel and it wasn’t running right. As a comparison, Jay Lindley’s Shelby replica was putting down 150 HP at the rear wheels so my results made me a little bit better!
After eating up 2/3 of our day with my car, Stew Harding’s 428 CJ was tied down to the dyno. Stew had had his car on the dyno during a SAAC club dyno day and Chip had recommended a jetting change which Stew had done. First full throttle pull netted a 140 HP. I was thinking all right!! — my small block puts out more than a big block!! My joy was short lived as Chip found that Stew’s carb secondaries were not opening. With this problem corrected, Stew’s car netted a reading of 169 HP at 4600RPM.
DARN!! He beat me — but remember — my car wasn’t running right. There will be another day…
This is one of the many cars in the Kay stable. It is extremely rare as most folks don’t want to give up the power amenities just to go a little faster!
Ron has run the car at the Rocky Mountain Mustang Roundup in the past and collected a trophy for his efforts. I really like the polished wheels!
