January 2001 Newsletter

From the President

I sit here writing this article between Christmas and New Years, fondly recalling the club's activities of the past year. The road, though sometimes rocky, was definitely worth traveling. Early in my term, I heard dissension about the frequency and types of activities. Working closely with the other officers and members, we tried to make the activities more timely and interesting. Three activities stand out in my mind. The Garden of the Gods Cruise and Mustang Birthday party back in April with the Southern Colorado Mustang Club from Pueblo was very special. This is an event we should do every year. The two fall cruises to the 8th Street Sonic were memorable as well. The low-key nature of the cruises, food, and company resulted in all participants having great time. The tire adhesion tests, which capped off the evenings, were a nice touch. These are but a few of the great Mustang memories from 2000. Let's make 2001 better yet!

We will be cruising to the Shelby American Collection in Boulder on Saturday, January 13th. We will leave from the Country Kitchen at the corner of Powers and Constitution at 8:00 a.m. For anyone interested in eating breakfast before departure, we will gather at 7:00 at the same location. The collection has approximately 40 Shelbys, Cobras, and GT40s, many of significant historical pedigree. Adult admission will be $5 with kids 12 and under free. We will receive a short tour with emphasis on the more historical cars.

I would like to congratulate the incoming officers for 2001. They are Bob McCune, President, Terry Myers, Vice President, Al Alberg, Secretary, and Dave Gardner, Treasurer. Per the bylaws, I will continue to serve as the Board of Directors Chairman. I would also like to thank them for volunteering their time to this club. As a reminder, the next Board meeting will be on January 8th at 7:30 p.m. at my house. All 2000 and 2001 officers should be present so we can formally hand duties to the new victims, err officers. As usual, all members are welcome to attend.

The outgoing officers deserve kudos as well. Neil Case, Vice President, Bob Syrotchen, Secretary, and Mike Spoelman, Treasurer, did an excellent job of keeping the club on track. I'm especially appreciative of Neil and Mike for stepping in to run club activities when my work or family plans kept me away. Ross Schwyhart also deserves recognition, providing excellent advice and support. I couldn't have asked for a better team.

Another member stepping up to the plate was Wayne Smith. He provided excellent ideas for activities, and really took our web site up a notch. If you haven't seen the site lately, check it out! Thanks Wayne.

We need a raffle coordinator for the upcoming year, so please volunteer if you are interested. Many thanks go to the Lindley’s and Collins' for running the raffle in '00.

Despite late changes to the plan, the Christmas party was very successful. On short notice, Ron Kay worked a deal with Golden Corral restaurant for our December 7th shindig. The food was tolerable and the White Elephant gift exchange was not only fun, but quite humorous as well. Holiday cheer and good humor was abundant, and everyone had a great time, including the kids, who participated in their own gift exchange. Gee, I wonder if we'll see the rubber chicken again next year.

Per the discussion at our November meeting, I'll be contacting the Old Car Club Council on how to join. The club will pick up the $50 annual fee, but we will be looking for a $3 surcharge from members to cover the individual fees. Standby for more information on this topic.

That's all for now. See ya at the Shelby Collection cruise.
