ROCKY MOUNTAIN

MUSTANGERS

September 2000 Volume 2, Issue 9

From the President

Well folks, our President is MIF (Miserable in Florida) as the military saw it fit to extend his business trip down to Florida to who knows how long! Bryan called me at 9:50 PM Monday and gave me the bad news - no President's letter for this issue (you don't have to cheer so loud!)

Just a reminder -- the meeting is at Maggie Mae's - 6:30 PM Saturday 9/23!

Mustang Mountain Magic

Mustang events can be found everywhere, but one of the nicer locales is Steamboat Springs, Colorado where the Rocky Mountain Mustang Roundup is held over Father's day weekend. This event always gives participants a fun mix of Mustang and Mountain activities with a nice break from the heat experienced at most summer shows.

Five Colorado clubs (Denver Mustang Club, Early Mustang Club, High Country Mustang Club, Rocky Mountain Mustangers, and the Shelby American Club) have put on the Rocky Mountain Mustang Roundup (RMMR) over the last twelve years. Steamboat Springs has been the host site for the last five years and has seen the event grow larger each year as word of this show has gotten around. And why not, the city and people of Steamboat open themselves up as the Mustang capitol of the Rockies. Friendlier and more outgoing folks would be hard to find.

Opening day on Thursday, June 15, was a laid back affair as early arrivals enjoyed the RMMR sponsored golf tournament, mountain biking, shopping, hiking, and the hot springs prior to early registration at the Steamboat Sheraton Resort and Tech inspection for Friday's Driving event.

Friday morning the Mustang events started in earnest with the Bridgestone/Firestone sponsored Closed Course Driving event. The Sports Car Club of America once again did an excellent job in designing a fast but safe course. 120 drivers competed with awards given for fastest time in men and women's stock, street prepared, street modified, and unlimited classes. It is always exciting to see Mustangs in motion and this event always draws a crowd from the area to hear the sound of engines revving and tires screeching.

If racing your Mustang isn't up your alley, there was the Pony Trails cruise promoted by Mustang Monthly on Friday afternoon. The cruise was a pleasant 2 1/2 hour drive over a 60-mile loop of gorgeous mountain roads around the Steamboat Springs area. The photo opportunities were abundant as the caravan of 32 cars stopped at Gore pass, the Toponas Country General Store, and several other locales where snow capped peaks and forest provided a nice background to Mustang Muscle.

Caravaning to and from Steamboat is half the fun of coming to the Roundup. The mountain passes, twisty roads, and beautiful views make the drive a pleasant adventure. 70 cars met in Denver Friday afternoon for a RMMR organized caravan to Steamboat Springs. Other area and out of state clubs also promote caravaning to Steamboat and lines of cars could be seen arriving at the host Steamboat Sheraton Resort center through out the afternoon and into the evening.

Waiting to meet the later arrivals and those completing the Driving event and Pony Trails cruise was the Friday hospitality BBQ. The BBQ is free to all participants and has proven over the years to be a great place to meet old friends, discuss Mustangs, do a little dancing, and do some final recaps over ones performance in the driving event. Music, chili, bratwurst, hot dogs, subs, chips, beer, and sodas welcomed the over 700 people who attended this years hospitality. Ford Motor Company and Show sponsor Sil-Ter Har Ford provided dessert in the form of the new Cobra R and several nice examples of new supercharged Saleen and Roush models.

The weather was perfect again on Saturday as last minute preparation, photo shoots, and pre-staging took place in the Steamboat Meadows parking lot. The people of Steamboat then turned their downtown over to 372 Mustang and special interest Fords as different years and models drove by class to the center of town and were lined up and down US 40 which had been closed off for the show. Over a thousand participants enjoyed the show and shine while taking advantage of the many excellent restaurants and interesting shopping opportunities nearby.

All participants stay busy voting the morning of the show, but take a break at noon to wander down to the Firestone truck for the results of the golf tournament and driving event. This is always a good opportunity to win one of the nicer sponsor prizes given out during the show and one lucky participant in the driving event always walks away with a free set of tires courtesy of Bridgestone/Firestone. Additional sponsor prizes were also awarded at registration and during the show.

With the conclusion of voting, the Show and Shine broke up at 3:00 PM. Due to the variety of activities possible in the Steamboat area Saturday evening had been set aside as a 'free evening' for participants. Many took the time to get in biking, hiking, shopping, or just relaxing in the local hot springs before getting together with friends at the local restaurants and taverns.

The Sunday Father's Day Awards Brunch was held at the Steamboat Sheraton Resort center as Show and Shine awards were announced. Photographs from the driving event and the Show and Shine were also available and everyone waits to see if they will win one of the special sponsor prizes. The premier prize of the show is a complete engine from sponsor AER. Five eager contestants are picked from the participants and then eliminated by selling their chance or being drawn until only the winner is left.

Several large groups of out of state clubs participated in this year's Roundup. Honors for club distance and participation this year went to the Northern Utah Mustang Club. Long distance award went to a participant who had driven out from Virginia. With the shows conclusion cars were packed and good byes said as all left Steamboat until next year.

The 13th annual Rocky Mountain Mustang Roundup will be held at Steamboat Springs over Father's Day weekend in 2001. For more information on next year's event or to access pictures and results from this year's event please visit the Rocky Mountain Mustang Roundup's web site at www.protsys.com/rmmr.
