Ross’s Rants and Raves

How I spent my summer vacation.

By Ross Shwyhart

How I spent my summer vacation. I went to The Rocky Mountain Mustang Roundup! I had lots of fun and met lots of neat people and saw lots of cool Mustangs!

June 11. Got off work at 3:30 and started for Denver. Got to Monument Hill and ran into rain and hail! This is not a good way to start off Roundup week. Fortunately no damage to the car. Bob, Mary, and I went to the Front Range Mustang meeting. They are doing their first car show tomorrow and there is still lots to do.

June 12. Up at 5:00 to wash the car for the show! This is suppose to be fun!? Got to the show and got staged and parked. This looks like it will be a fun show since it is for all types of cars. By 10 o’clock all the cars are parked and I have been around and talked to most of the owners. This is what I like about shows. In my option the most interesting car at the show was 1957 GMC 4x4 suburban. The owner got it from his wife’s grandfather who bought it new. This fully optioned beauty had a radio, heater, directional signals, and windshield washers. The truck looks tough enough to take on a couple of these new SUV’s and come out none the worse for wear. It sure would be nice if the beast could talk. In any case the Parker show was fun. Came back to the Springs in time to take in the Powers cruise in.

June 13. Back up to Denver to celebrate my niece’s birthday. Spent the night at Bob and Mary’s so Bob and I could get and early start on putting new suspension under my ‘85.

June 14. Pony Boys Mustang Performance. I learn more about the front suspension of my car than I really care to know. All the articles in the Mustang magazines say that changing springs is something you can do in a couple of hours in the comfort of your driveway! They lie! It was all Bob and I could do to get the new shorter springs installed in a fully equipped shop. While Bob and I are trying to get the first spring seated I was thinking I hope no extra terrestrials were looking in. As they watched 2 grown men struggle to put in a coiled piece of metal into place - one pulling on the ‘A’ arm while the other is pushing on the spring I can hear Ogog saying his leader "Let’s get out of here there’s no intelligent life here!" By the way the new

parts made a major difference. I wish I would have done it sooner.

June 15. Cloudy and gray. I spend much of the day in the logistics of getting 2 cars ready to go to Roundup. I spent a lot of time trying to decide if I should clean them here or wait until Steamboat. Amazing how even after going to several Roundups I still get excited. Thanks to sister for driving one of the cars.

June 16. Sally, my sister, and I head for Denver to meet with Bob and Mary to go to Steamboat. On the way we run into rain, sun, hail, and snow! A real Colorado chamber of commerce day! The trip on highway 40 was a little shower than in years past when Bob and I caravaned with some members of the Denver Mustang club and we caravaned at 80+ mph with no mishaps except for Bob’s heater hose blow out! We arrive in Steamboat and check in to the hotel. What a fun trip. I really do like to drive my cars!

June 17. Have to wait for the hotel to get the car wash set up. Bob and I spend the time talking about Mustangs and shows. Get the cars washed and get our bearing in Steamboat again. The place sure is growing. The Roundup is lucky that we still get to have the show on Main Street! Have a final Roundup board meeting to make sure that all the bases are covered. Looks like it is going to be ‘ a really BIG shew’ as Ed Sullivan would say.

June 18. The driving event. This is what a lot of people come for. As usual there are good runs and not so good runs. The Rocky Mountain Mustangers put up a good show. Glen Outcalt and his highly modified ‘85 turning fast time of the day. Hap and Sara did their usual good runs. Kris and Pat did also. Pat you need to talk to your wife and find out her driving secrets. The big winner of the driving event was Neil Case who won a set of tires from Firestone! I think that every body had a good time. At 5:30 the BQ started and the line was quick to form. Everybody got fed in time to hear the Fabulous Thunderbirds play. There were people still coming in to register at 9 p.m. when we closed. Looks like over 300 cars!

June 19. Up early to get the cars ready for the show and shine. Bob and I are going to try to get all the cars together for the show. This takes some doing since we are in two classes. Man oh man! 320 bright and shiny Mustangs! What a sight this is what it’s all about. The largest class turned out to be the 1993 and later Cobras with 34 yep 34 cars! The next biggest class was early modified with 20 cars! This was great. It took all morning just to look at all the cars so I could vote. Tonight we had a presentation by Ford SVT about current and upcoming products. The new Cobra R really looks cool. It would be nice to be able to get one but then what would I do with my other 2 cars?! After the SVT show we cruised into town for some ice cream and a little socializing with the other Mustangers

June 20. Well, here it is the end of another Roundup. Bob and I gather up the tickets for the awards breakfast and sit down for the awards. The club was the winner of the "Cone" trophy from the SCCA club clash. The club has won this every year since the beginning of the event. The Mustangers do well. Wayne Smith, Hap Schadler, Jim Reeder, Phyllis S (sorry I don’t have an updated club roster @ work), Pat & Kris Chambers, Bob Provost, Terry Myers all received Awards of Excellence. Thanks to everybody who helped

and came to Roundup. I really hate this day because it means the end of another fun Roundup and having to say goodbye to friends for another year. Sorry if I missed any winners but the cat must have eaten my homework. I can not find the paper I wrote the notes about Roundup on. Now out to put the fires at work!

An upcoming event in August that I feel would be nice for the club to participate in is the Rods & Scooters Poker Run. The proceeds from this go to help Christmas Unlimited help needy kids get the things that they need to succeed in school. More when I get the info.

We need to be thinking about a site for the Christmas party. If everybody likes we can try Tony Roma’s again. Let’s talk about it at the meeting.

I would like to do August’s meeting at a park. If anybody knows where we can meet please bring it up at the meeting.

The AMC’ers want to do a cruise/poker run in Oct.

I will be talking with PPIR about another show in conjunction with the TransAm race on Oct 1-3.

The next board meeting is at Bob Syrotchen’s house on August 2.

I will have a sample of the window cling at the meeting and the people who ordered nametags can pick them up from Mike.
